ONE DAY YOU WERE WALKING IN MUD NEXT DAY IT FELT LIKE CEMENT. I TOO LOST BUDDIES JUST LIKE "CHIC". WE DIDN'T TALK MUCH ABOUT WHAT WE WENT THROUGH. MAYBE A NIGHT OUT WITH A FEW BEERS UNDER OUR BELT SOMBODY WOULD MENTION THIER TIME IN KOREA. BUT, IT WAS SHORT LIVED. I SLAUTE THOSE MEN AND YES WOMEN WHO NEVER CAME BACK FROM ANY WAR WE FOUGHT. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from johnmac -- My review of the new edition : As I wrote way back when I read the first edition, Chick and I have been friends for most of our lives and many crazy adventures BUT none like the one described in the book, the craziest adventure of all -- inspired by super-patriot bartender "Colonel" George Lynch, Chick sets out on a Merchant Ship to deliver beer to neighborhood friends serving in Vietnam. Chick has a marvelous memory of incidents -- he can recount incidents that occurred sixty years ago when we were drinking beer underage in Inwood Park and he is a great storyteller. A marvelous thing about the book is not only the great story but how co-author Joanna Molloy captured Chick's voice. I could hear Chick as I read the book. Even if you have read the first edition, buy and read the new one -- many more pictures and additional material including the stories of Chick's relation with his anti-war sister and of the Vietnam sacrifice of Toimmy Minogue, an Inwood hero ( Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2017 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from George T. Chapman -- Great Story!! : Guy takes off to Vietnam at the height of the war to deliver beer to guys from the neighborhood serving in the military. Whole idea is preposterous, but he pulls it off. Turns out I was over there at the same time and place, and he managed to get caught up in the Tet Offensive like all the rest of us. I almost never start reading a book and not staying with it to the end. I find myself not reaching for this to even force myself to read at least one page at a time until done. I went ahead and placed my order and set it to ship to my dad, since I knew it would be after Christmas. Received a notice the other day that it shipped and would arrive 12/28. I was surprised and happy it would arrive that soon. My dad just called me (12/23) and asked if I knew anything about an Amazon package that was just delivered to him. I am beyond thrilled. I was perfectly fine with 12/28. But Amazon exceeded all expectation getting it there so quickly - especially knowing all the shipping/delivery delays being experienced by most carriers. It turned out that there’s also a video about this, and now i’m thinking how great it would be if it was made into a movie. It was a nice read of the adventure of author and adventure it was. Inspiring and very funny. : This is a masterful book, the unbelievable and until now, the unheralded story of the amazing life of Chick Donahue. I read this book straight through in one sitting, I could not put it down. Chick is a man of valor and integrity, who risked his life to improve the lives of others. As a Veteran, a Sand Hog, a Union Leader, and raconteur, we all owe a debt of gratitude to Chick Donahue. I highly recommend this book, do give yourself a gift and get a bit of Chick in your life.
